If you’re looking at your garden and wondering how it’s got into such a mess, don’t worry. It can seem like you’ve only turned your back on it for a few weeks and it’s completely overgrown. But what seems messy now, can soon be turned back around. Here’s how to smarten up your garden in five easy steps.

Step 1: Give it a trim

If everything is truly overgrown, then your first step is to cut everything back. This is one of the hardest jobs to do, so once this is done you can breathe a sigh of relief. You will probably need some secateurs for this. And if you’ve got branches that need trimming, you may need a pruning saw or loppers. If anything looks too high or big to manage yourself, you might need some help from a gardener or tree surgeon.

Step 2: Neaten the edges

Once everything has been cut back and cleared, you can start to neaten up your boundaries, lawn edges and borders. If your fencing looks a bit untidy, you could give it a coat of paint. If any of the fencing is broken or rotten, you’re best looking into fencing prices first. You may find replacing it all is more cost effective. Going round the edges of your lawn with an edging tool will create a nice neat outline and removing weeds from paths will help restore a sense of order.

Step 3: Add some new plants

Now everything has been tidied up, you may notice some bare patches in your garden. When adding in new plants to these areas, make sure you pick suitable species. Shady areas will need plants that can thrive there, so look for evergreens such as shade loving ferns. Woodland plants such as mountain laurel should also work well. For sunnier areas, adding plants that flower in spring, summer and autumn will give you color for much of the year.

Step 4: Keep the weeds in check

Once you’ve got the garden looking smarter, it’s a good idea to make it easy for you to keep it that way. Adding materials such as bark, mulch and gravel to some areas will help keep the weeds down.  Making a checklist of regular gardening jobs will also help you to keep on top of the growth. Step 5: Grab a seat and enjoy

Once you’ve got the garden looking in top shape, the final step is to enjoy it! So, make sure you’ve got some sort of garden seating. It could be a bench, hammock, sun lounger or deck chair, the choice is yours.
