Move Over, Armani  − 18 September, 2008

Just as I finish throwing the last shovel of dirt on one project, I stumble across another.

I was browsing through my usual string of websites during my coffee break the other day and saw that Hack A Day was having a contest to design a new t-shirt.  As was evident from my previous project, I'm crap at graphics design.  What puts this contest in the realm of possibility for the average Joe, however, are the design stipulations:

1. The design must incorporate the skull and wrenches logo.
2. The design can't violate any copyright laws or trademarks.
3. The design should be one color.

So, one color, and it needs to be simple enough to allow it to be silk-screened onto a t-shirt.  That really narrows the design possibilities down to something manageable.

My first idea came to me fairly quickly: basically, the skull and wrenches logo within a circuit diagram.  The problems with it, though, are that the design might not be a good candidate for a t-shirt and it is a pretty obvious design -- I'd be surprised if it hasn't been done before.  And, in fact, it has...  to much better effect.  Someone had submitted a circuit type of design before I did; his looks much better, but it's just artistic.  My design, though not as cool-looking, is an actual circuit diagram (flashing LEDs).

A few more ideas followed fairly quickly: the logo with electricity and the logo with a satellite dish (my wife's idea).  None of these first three ideas are what I would consider worthy of the status of bearing the Hack A Day banner on the backs of geeks everywhere.  They just seemed too simplistic or something.

My next three ideas were better, though still not "professional" quality.  Although I don't think it fits with the theme of Hack A Day, I kind of like my final design.  My wife likes it, too, since it appeals to her inner space geek.  (In case it's not obvious, the design is taken from part of the plaque on the Pioneer 10 spacecraft.)

The contest ended September 15.  As of today no winner has been announced.
