Don't Be Stoic − 28 March, 2008
Not when it comes to your health. I've had a bit of an gastrointestanal issue. It's been almost five months. I just went in to see the doctor today.
Five months. How could I let it go that long, you ask? Welcome to my world of procrastination. But how could I endure five months of, well, I'd rather not go into the details... but yeah, it's not pretty. I told the physician's assistant that I'd thought maybe it was a parasite. Or maybe even colon cancer. She did a double take.
"If you think you might have colon cancer, you do not wait. You come in immediately!", she exclaimed. She went on to say, "Don't be stoic. It's the stoic ones that we lose. They wait too long." That's good food for thought. If it had been colon cancer (which it probably isn't), I'd be five months down the road when I could have been in treatment.
I must be insane.
To follow the next part of this story, read about how my poop test came out. Also, here is a story about another time I waited WAY TOO LONG to take care of a health problem.

My bio dad is the same way. He knew he had a bump in his testicules and waited and waited. I tried persuading him to go to the doctor's but he didn't want to. He always does this. I don't even know if he finally went. Myself, I wait and wait and suffer and suffer...until I come to my senses and realize I am gaining nothing that way. I guess it's when I realize that it won't go away that I cave in and go to the doctor's. In my family, we don't want to be seen as weak people. So we suffer instead.

I don't think "stoic" is the word we're looking for here... :-)
