Baby David, Born Amidst a Firestorm − 25 October, 2007
David was born in the middle of San Diego in the middle of the San Diego firestorms. Thankfully, our home (and our friends homes) were not damaged in the week-long fires that destroyed so much property and life here.
When we got the call to come in to the hospital it was because there were so many empty beds in maternity. Due to the fires, scheduled inductions had been put on hold. Necessary inductions for overdue babies, on the other hand...
Steph and I arrived the early morning of the 25th and David was born at 6:36 PM that evening. It was an intense bonding experience for the three of us. Now that we're at home, taking a few days to get to know one another, a flood of emotions pours over me as I think of that day. More material for more stories to be told another day.
The morning after David was born, Steph and I woke at dawn and noticed a strange site outside our 6th floor recovery suite. Fog. with so much smoke in the air the past few days, we were not sure if the fire was getting closer or if it was our classic fall fog that covers San Diego like a blanket.
For a father to see his son born healthily and for mom to survive the ordeal in such good spirits, nothing could have relieved me more.
When our pediatrician arrived to do David's first check-up, Steph asked if what we saw outside was smoke. He said no. We all were relieved.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Your life just completely changed. I hope you got a chance to say goodbye before it disappeared.

Nope. I felt that a clean break with no explanation would do just fine. My past should stay my past, to be remembered but not resurrected.

Woo-hoo! Good on ya! Your life has most assuredly changed. Loss of sleep, loss of social life, poop, pee, puke, frustration, unspecified angst... it's all waaaay overshadowed by the joy, excitement, and overwhelming love. I wouldn't trade it for anything. This is living.

Thanks, BT. We should get together again soon. I could really use one of your overstuffed BBQ's some football weekend. Hopefully some time before OSU plays UCLA next.
