Speaking about Peace
−

Watching this speech reminds me of a speech I gave in high school. I was in 9th grade and I was taking a class on speech-writing and public speaking. It was a core class required by my high school. As such I took it seriously because beyond good grades and doing what was expected of me, I actually believed the class would make me a better public speaker. Speaking in front of others is something I've always prided myself on. But the best speech I ever gave was the final speech for my 9th grade speech class. It was on world peace. I worked hard on the facts. I tried my best to make it not come off as crunchy or preachy, but to instead win with impossible-to-deny logic. At the end of the speech though, I became so impassioned by what I was saying that my eyes welled up and I couldn't finish my written words. I started improvising from what I had remembered. And the words just flowed.
Watching this speech, I get that uncontrollable emotion again. I am proud of myself, oddly, as I watch Jehane talk about her greatest wishes. It takes a lot to bear your soul like that. And it takes a lot to impart your dreams on others. Especially when they are as lofty as hers.
