Home-Cooked Meal for My Wife and Two Friends − 23 May, 2007
Marcus and Jacqueline came over last night to help us eat ravioli. Then we left Steph at home with her homework while the three of us went and saw The Electric Soft Parade, The Beach House and The Clientele at the Casbah.
I miss hanging out with Marcus. He's one of those guys whose not afraid to talk (intelligently, I might add) about religion, politics and money. I remarked to him how easily it is we seem to finish a bottle of wine and solve the world's problems. It's friends like those and nights like last night that make you feel blessed.
I used to see Marcus every day at work. Since I left Red Door I've seen him maybe 5 times. This is a disappointing trend. And I told him so.
------------
As for the show, I discovered three new bands last night. The opening band was a group from Britain called "The Electric Soft Parade" that my buddy Dave imported. I say "imported" because Dave is has a record label called "Better Looking Records" and I'm on his list for shows. Whenever one of his bands comes to town it's always my intention to attend, but I'm lazy about my ALT culture. So last night I passed over the season-ending American Idol to see The Electric Soft Parade's US debut. They are quite the popular band across the pond, I've heard. And they demonstrated a knack for song even with serious jet lag. Having arrived just that afternoon, they powered through the show and impressed me with their tunes. Imagine mixing some of the tonality of the latter Radiohead with the stage presence of Oasis (the lead guitarists and singers are brothers) and the key-shifting and rhythm-changing musical antics of a Modest Mouse. High company, I know. But I really enjoyed their sound even if Randy Jackson would say "Yo, dog, I think you had some issues with pitch but overall I don't think it was your best performance" I think they are well worth the iTunes download. The proceeds go to the band and Dave's label - so I'm a bit partial, yes. :-)
