Crazy Ivan  − 16 September, 2004

Remember "The Hunt for Red October"?  The film that popularized the term "Crazy Ivan", for a sudden change in direction?

Well, it happened in real life.

Hurricane Ivan hit on this date.  It missed Gainesville.  Still socked Florida, though.

After it passed, I thought, well, it's over.  It crossed the U.S. to the Atlantic and I was sure it was over.

Then, the next day, one of my kids said "Hey, did you hear that Ivan has made a loop and is coming back?"

We had been studying hurricanes, actually -- I'd discarded my earlier lesson plans and went on a brief jog into weather, since we were all, effectively, living in a giant science lab at the time.  I'd mentioned the off chance that a hurricane could curve just far enough to bear back down and come by for a second swipe at Florida.  It'd never happened, I said, but that didn't mean it couldn't.

Well, it did.

Ivan did a loop-de-loop and came back and smacked into Miami on September 20, as a low pressure system.  Even weeks later, it was still a storm system, dumping rain on Texas and causing floods.

Ah, but the storm season was not over.
