Coming out of the dark − 28 April, 2007
In 2004, Florida was hit by four hurricanes; three passed through our area; two of these knocked out our electricity for weeks. After all that time sitting around in a dark, humid house, it was an incredible relief when the power came back on.
I am in the same situation today.
My wife just came back from her two month detail in Washington D.C. I feel the same way today as I did when the lights suddenly began working again -- like life has returned.
On the plane, my wife met a woman from Charleston whose sister had just been in a car accident. She'd had to make an emergency trip here to Gainesville. We gave her a ride downtown. See, during my wife's last long trip (to Cambodia), she fell ill, and was helped out by a lot of strangers. We were "paying it forward."
After our mission downtown, we went to our favorite restaurant -- Las Margaritas. And then we went home. For the first time in months, this is my home again. Before, when I was in the tunnel, it seemed like a storage area for an unused life.
