Morgan's Farewell − 10 March, 2007
Updated: added photo 13-May-2007.
I first met Morgan Caraway on May 30, 2003, when he was part of the band El Robot. We were talking last night and both agreed: though it hasn't even been four years, it seems a lifetime ago.
Last night, I went to Morgan's going away party. He is leaving Gainesville; he and his girlfriend Mary Jane are moving to Big Sur, California. They say they'll be back.
I'm not sure.
Gainesville has changed a lot in four years; the local music scene has sort of imploded. While he was in town, Morgan was a member of sometimes three bands at once. He will be missed.
But you know what? I hope he doesn't come back.
See, Morgan is not just talented; in my opinion, he is one of the great talents I have met. His bass playing is amazing (you can check him out on his MySpace page, and also on his former band's page, Nim Sum).
I am not selfish enough to want him to stay in town just so I can see him every now and then. He really deserves more than this college town can offer. So, I hope he finds it on the West Coast. If that means the only time I see him thereafter is on CD covers, awards shows, and music catalogs ("The Morgan Caraway Signature Bass"), I'm willing to live with that.
