Starfish CD release − 15 April, 2005
Killarney Star released an album on this day, Starfish, with me on bass and my friend Andy Anderson on drums. Our CD release party was at a club downtown called The Atlantic.
Oh, man, is this ever a story.
Kaley, a.k.a. Killarney Star, wrote and arranged all the music the band performed. We had been building publicity for this show for months. Kaley's then-boyfriend (now husband), Allen, had learned to screenprint T-shirts and posters for this show. We had CDs made, printed, ready to sell; we had an email list signup sheet; we had everything you could want for a fancy CD release.
Except for one thing:
Kaley's voice.
That's right, she had laryngitis.
Now, somehow, she pulled this off. She rested her voice for days prior to the show, and tried hard to recover enough to pull this one off. It was a big day; the Atlantic was a popular club, and getting booked there wasn't exactly a card trick.
We made it. It was an Olympic feat of endurance on her part, and one of the performances she did that I will always admire. Despite what happened later.
