Charles was murdered - RIP − 16 May, 2004
My dear friend Charles Patterson (36 years old) was murdered in cold blood in the presence of his family (wife and 5 kids ages 1-13 at that time). They recently moved to new home on Franklin Blvd in South Sacramento and didn't really know many neighbors. That night Charles heard the gate to the house jingle and he went up to the window to investigate. He was shot 5 times in the torso and died instantly. The case was classified as "mistaken identity" and the killer was never brought to justice (to my knowledge). I personally think that no one in the police department gave a fuck to even do a thorough investigation because they were poor and African-American. The case just didn't have the intrigue or the financial foundation of infamous murders like Laci Peterson.
This was the first time in my life I was faced head on with such a tragedy and I cried and cried. I cried for Charles, but mostly I cried for his children

Thank you for your kind words. The really sad part of this story is that 2 oldest of his children didn't have a mother (well she was a drug addict and lost custody) so they were placed with some distant relatives in New Orleans and I don't even know what happened to them and how they survived (I hope they did) Katrina.

When something like this happens, the only thing we can do is turn to what faith we have and hope that it provides solace, for those involved as well as ourselves. I hope you find yours.

How terrible that he was killed...even worse that his children were present! Seriously, what has this world come to?
