parking lots: google vs yahoo who is more green − 14 December, 2006

i'm convinced that the stock price of a publicly traded tech company, such as google or yahoo, has a direct correlation with the kinds of cars (ie luxury vs energy efficient) you will find in the corporate parking lots. i believe most employees at both google and yahoo would support al gore's claims about global warming in the film *an inconvenient truth* and would label themselves as being *eco-friendly* . both sergey brin and larry page say they both drive a toyota prius or now the tesla roadster, right? however, there is an inverse relationship between the price of the stock vs the *green/energy efficient vehicles* being driven.

let me expound on my theory. ever since the stock price of google started breaking through key resistance levels and trading at record highs, the number of toyota priuses and other energy efficient vehicles in the google parking lot have been disappearing and have been replaced by porsches, bmws, mercedes, etc... not to mention the bentleys. on the other hand at the yahoo parking lot where there's been a shake-up in management, the stock has been downgraded and has been languishing in the mid-20's, there are still lots of toyota priuses, hondas, subarus, etc...hence more energy efficient vehicles.

so the increased *green* in the stock price and one's portfolio doesn't necessary translate to a *green* vehicle or lifestyle, quite the contrary. despite what people like sergey and larry say by claiming they are environmentally conscious and drive a toyota prius or their super sexy, *100%* electric tesla, it is negated by the fact that they turn around and spend millions on a used boeing 767 that runs on *jet* fuel, the most unrefined and dirtiest type of fuel around, to allegdedly fly their friends to africa. in fact the higher the stock price of google the larger the ecological footprint is of each employee and this has a more adverse reaction on the environment. the fact is the more *gr$$n* the stock, the less *green* the vehicle and lifestyle which is *not* good for the environment.

oh, i just remembered something else. ross mayfield once coined the term *parking lot indicator*. he said that by cruising the parking lots of silicon valley companies on weekends, by the number of cars parked in the lot it can be used as an indicator on the direction of the stock price.
